Dallas

Deep in the heart of Texas, the home of J.R. and other long tall Texans

The Texas Star, Dallas and Fort Worth together conspire to make the biggest urban area in Texas. Far from the sea, the city’s development and success owes much to the railroads, and latterly the huge transport hub of the airport. Cattle ranching and indeed the discovery of oil helped things along the way. Yup, everything here speaks of Texas.

Dallas is not a big tourist town, as I gathered when asked more than once “why’d y’all come all the way here from Scotland?” I was visiting a family friend on both occasions, 1990 and 2000, staying for a week on the second trip which was a lot of fun. This was still pre-digital camera era for me, so much is lacking photographically. Dallas has good nightlife, very hot weather and everything is Texas-sized! Yee-haw!

Downtown Dallas, with the Bank of America Plaza prominent in the centre. It was the tallest building west of the Mississippi until the Chase Tower in Houston was built, and features in the opening sequence of the TV show too.

Out for lunch in the Reunion Tower, from which the previous photo was taken. Reunion Tower is part of the Hyatt Hotel and stands just a couple of streets away from the grassy knoll.

Looking pleased with myself having just scoffed a Texas-sized burger at Reunion Tower.

Other Texas-themed activities ensued – here I try my hand at riding a horse, still I think the most recent time I’ve sat astride and steered a steed. I also had a shot at roping a mechanical steer – suffice to say, my talents lie elsewhere.

Southfork Ranch, where the TV show “Dallas” was filmed. After the show finished, the place became a tourist attraction. It is just outside the city, and I visited only on my 1990 trip.
