Focus of the modern world, the USA leads the world in many aspects, with its cultural influence apparent in almost every other country worldwide. Its political experiment of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all has continued since 1776, albeit far from smoothly. The USA’s economic, scientific and military ambitions have extended its reach around the globe in a new form of empire, less physical occupation than cultural occupation. If the nineteenth century was led by the United Kingdom, the twentieth was undoubtedly powered by the United States. For the twenty-first, it remains to be seen.

I have long-standing connections with the USA, from my first visit at the age of eight during the Gulf crisis, through multiple holidays over the years, plus several periods of living and working in the country. Most significant were the years I spent working in Alaska, but there is still much of the country I would like to explore, having visited only around 15 states so far. Some of these pages date back to the early nineties, therefore photographic quality is not guaranteed!
