The quiet Emirate, a peaceful world apart from its neighbours
A world apart from the thrusting modern cities further down the coast, Umm al Quwain is something of a welcome quiet backwater in amongst the frenzy of the rest of the UAE. The Emirate is the least populous of the UAE, but still has a number of attractions including the enormous “Dreamland Aqua Park” on the outskirts of town.
I don’t recall if I visited Umm al Quwain during the 1980s whilst living in Dubai, and visiting in 2010 didn’t bring back any memories. It was however an interesting place to explore, and I was amazed at how different it was to the rest of the UAE.

Umm al Quwain Museum is housed in the former fort, right in the centre of the old part of town.
The museum even has an old tank sitting outside as an exhibit.
It’s a different way of life in Umm al Quwain, with people hanging on to older, more traditional ways of living.

On a Friday at sundown, the residents of Umm al Quwain can mostly be found down at the beach, enjoying a swim in the fading light.
