Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Natural treasure trove of Central America

Although a small country, Costa Rica punches well above its weight for biodiversity and scenery, with the country’s name literally translating as “rich coast”. It is almost identical in size to Bosnia and Herzegovina and a bit larger than Denmark, with a population of around five million, and is highly progressive having reversed its deforestation, and disbanded its standing army since 1949. The country hosts over half a million species, representing around 5% of all known species worldwide.

I spent about a week in Costa Rica in late 2016, with most of that time at the beach/surfing resort of Jacó on the Pacific Coast. We had a few nights in the capital San José as well, plus a day trip up to the Poás Volcano and the cloud forests that the country is famous for. Having never been to this part of the world before, I was keen to see a bit more so headed off to Panama for a few days, before returning to San José to catch the flight back through London to home.
