Highly developed nation set between giants

One of the smallest countries in South America, Uruguay is also one of its most developed, although it didn’t escape the wave of dictatorships throughout the region in the second half of the 20th century. Having to fight for its independence in turn from Spain, Argentina, Portugal and Brazil, Uruguay has had a tough time of it, but emerged into the 21st century with one of the highest standards of living on the continent.
We spent three nights in Uruguay towards the end of our South American tour of 2005, arriving in the capital Montevidéo for two nights on a flight from Puerto Iguazu via Buenos Aires, before catching a bus to the pleasant coastal town of Colonia del Sacramento for some downtime before crossing the River Plate back to Argentina. The weather wasn’t in our favour unfortunately, it being the middle of the Uruguayan winter, but we had an interesting and enjoyable time, and I’m keen to go back someday.
